A Review of the KIB
I took my wife to Kelly's Island for her birthday and several visits to the Kelly's Island Brew Pub were planned.
I would first like to say that ALL pubs could learn a lot from Doug/ Patti and all their staff there. Polite, efficient and a real pleasure to talk to are just some of the great things I can say about this Brew pub.
I sampled 5 of the Ale's on offer and I left happy and full. The Mayflies made sitting outside fun but I loved it. The food is excellent and I would fully recommend the Roast Beef and the fries are amazing. So on to the Ales.
1. Lake Erie Lager - This is a 4.5% Lager and it is a German Style beer with a Golden Colour (UK spelling sorry). This went down very well, lovley taste and can match any German beer I have drunk. 11/10
2. Island Devil - This is 8.5% ale and tastes like it - a great tasting ale and my second favorite it has a great fruit aroma and (I know I read it) it has a plum taste to it. I really enjoyed the flavour and the ale was excellent 10/10
3. Dawg Bizkit Brown - This is 5.5% Brown ale - I cannot do this ale enough justice to say about it. The taste was the best I have drunk for a while and it went down really nicley. This is a well brewed ale and I think it is better than a few of the Great Lakes ales without a doubt. I loved it so much I took 8 bottles back to Columbus wth me to enjoy over the week. The brewing of this ale is beautiful and I will would highly recommend this ale to anybody that takes ale seriousley. This was my favorite ale there and I will therefore rate it 15/10
4. Anglers Ale - This is a 5.5% Ale and used to be my second favorite. This ale has a nice crewm head to it and tastes impecable. As Doug says in his notes " God Save the Queen" after a couple of pints. The flavour is excellent and not heavy to drink. I will rate this Ale again 10/10
5. Gale Force IPA - This is a 6.5% IPA and for an IPA this is one of the best I have tasted. It is a light copper colour and very crisp to the taste. This went down well with my Roast Beef Dinner. I wish I could have bought some of this in bottles home with me, Ian loved it and so do I, glad it was still on tap when I got there.
On my final night I spoke to Doug and told him that I thought his brews were excellent mentioning how good the Dawg Bizkit Brown was he pull me a pint on the house and this really made my night.
The ale here is brewed with great care and love and it really shows. Hospitality is second to none and I will be back every year to the Island and the Brew Pub. If more brewers took this much care over their ales we would all be a lot happier and all have great ale's to drink.
I was sad to leave as Doug said he would be brewing again on Friday, but work calls again sadly or I would have stayed another night at the very least. So a big THANK YOU to all at Kelly's Island Brewery and your ale's are outstanding and I think the hotel being built next to the Brew Pub will I hope increase the people that will be able to sample this highly professional brew masters ales.
Thank you all

Gale Force Ale: Batten down the hatches, hops-lovers! Find a safe harbor to anchor. You're about to enjoy the best India Pale Ale on the Great Lakes. This superior brew has an Erie combination of 2-Row, Crystal, wheat and mild malts. It is then seriously bittered with Centennial hops for a perfect balance. The color is a light copper blonde and the body is medium. The flavor is crisp and hoppy, finishing dry and malty. Its aroma is pleasantly hoppy with just a touch of malt, and the head is thick and creamy. I recommend that only serious Hop Heads consume this brew, all others will perish!!
Summer Haze: Attention lite beer lovers, the wait is over. Finally, a handcrafted beer is available for the lighter palette. Our brew is an American Heffeweisen. Starting with a light body and cloudy blond color, its flavor is a mild wheat with just a touch of banana clove. It finishes dry. The head is thick and white with the pleasant aroma of malt and banana clove. Weve achieved this by combining white wheat, Munich and 2 Row malts with just a bit of Halletaur hops for kicks. The unique banana clove presence is from the German yeastno bananas or cloves were harmed in the brewing process. This tasty brew is to be consumed on hot and hazy summer daysafter you mow the lawn.
Lake Erie Lager: Time to pimp za beer, German engineering is in za house!! This brew is a classic German Style Lager, beginning with the medium golden body and snow white head. The flavor is light and crisp, finishing dry with a bit of hops and a clean aroma. The malt combination consist of 2-Row, Crystal Wheat and Chocolate, bittering with Hallautaur hops (za perfect blend!). I recommend this brew to the die-hard Heineken or Labatts drinkers, or anybody zat needs zeir attitude adjusted.
Angler's Ale: Tighten your lines, Anglers. This is one brew worth reeling in. A Standard English Bitters, which possesses a medium body, dark copper color, thick creamy blonde head with a soft hoppy aroma. The flavor starts with a smooth malt and hop combination, finishing hoppy and semi-dry. Sure to have you Yanks saying, God Save the Queen after a couple pints!! To achieve this revolutionary brew, I start with Maris Otter 2 Row, Carmel wheat and Munich malts. I bitter with Fuggles and Kent Golden hopsthe same way our English brothers and sisters have for hundreds of years. I recommend this brew to any bloke that favors Sam Adams or Anchor Steam. Cheers, Mate.
Island Devil: The Devil went down to Kelleys Island and he was looking for a soul to steal. He was in a bind because he was out of time and was going to miss the ferry. So he stopped in at the KIB and hastily made a deal. And the rest is history. Our devilish brew is a Classic Double Belgian Style Ale, with a medium copper color and body. The head is light blonde and creamy with a fruity/malty aroma. The flavor starts smooth and malty with a hit of spiced plum, then finishes semi-dry. Its unique taste comes from the combination of 2-Row and Crystal malts. It is then bittered with Haulertauer and Saaz hops. I use a Trappist yeast to ferment. This gives it that crazy spiced plum flavor. After tasting this enticing elixir you would never guess that you were drinking a brew that has twice the alcohol of a mere mortal's beer. I recommend that this beverage be consumed by professionals only! (You know who were taking about.)
Dawg Bizkit Brown: "This friendly brew's bark is definitely worse than its bite. A classic Brown American Ale with a nutty malty full body flavor, and creamy tan head. There is just a touch of mild hops for a semi-dry finish. The dark brown color is achieved by combining 2-Row Roasted Barley, Crystal and Chocolate Malts then bittered with Northern Brewers hops. The perfect brew for cool Lake Erie evenings (and my favorite) makes this friendly little guy our most requested ale. We recommend that everybody gives it a try. For the Guinness and Newcastle drinkers, we think you will enjoy this treat. And cheers to our Cleveland brothers and sisters: Go Browns!
